XAUUSD Weekly Outlook: Gold Stabilizes Above 4,150 as Wednesday CPI Takes Center Stage (Week of October 12, 2026)
Where price stands
Spot gold trades around 4,183 on Tuesday morning (October 13), holding the recovery that began after last Wednesday’s flush to 4,067. The week is only two sessions old, but the shape is constructive: Monday pushed to 4,217 before settling at 4,172, and Tuesday’s dip to 4,151 was bought back above 4,180. So far this week’s range is 4,151–4,217, sitting on top of last week’s 4,067–4,208 range.
The bigger picture has not changed: gold remains in the wide corrective structure that has been running since the May peak at 4,774, with the June low at 3,942 still the line that separates “correction” from “trend change”. Price is still below both the 20-day EMA (≈4,215) and the 50-day EMA (≈4,265), but the sequence of lows is quietly improving — 4,067 (Oct 7) → 4,103 (Oct 8) → 4,151 (today). The macro tape is the swing factor: the Fed hiked in September to a 3.75–4.00% target range, and markets are openly debating a further increase at the October 27–28 FOMC. That hawkish overhang is what capped the late-September rebound at 4,316, and it is why Wednesday’s CPI matters so much.
Key levels
| Level | Type | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 4,316 | Major resistance | September 25 swing high — the rejection zone that capped the last rally; trend repair needs it back |
| 4,265 | Resistance | 50-day EMA, falling — the dynamic cap on any recovery |
| 4,215–4,228 | Resistance band | 20-day EMA plus the October 2 lower high — the first real hurdle, just above Monday’s 4,217 high |
| 4,151 | Pivot | Tuesday’s low and the round number — as long as buyers defend it, the higher-low sequence stays intact |
| 4,103 | Support | Last week’s repeated lows (Oct 6 and Oct 8) — first downside checkpoint |
| 4,067 | Key support | October 7 flush low — a daily close below reopens the road toward the June floor |
| 3,942 | Major support | June 29 low — the structural floor of the entire correction |

Two scenarios
Bullish (recovery while 4,151 holds): the improving low sequence meets a soft September CPI on Wednesday. A break and daily acceptance above the 4,215–4,228 band would squeeze price toward the 50-day EMA at 4,265, and above that the 4,316 rejection zone comes back into play. This path turns the “lower highs” script into a range-bottoming one. Invalidation: a daily close back below 4,103.
Bearish (base case while below 4,228): a hot CPI revives the hawkish Fed narrative into the October 27–28 meeting, the EMA band rejects price, and 4,151 gives way — targeting 4,103 first, then a retest of 4,067. A daily close below 4,067 would put 4,000–3,980 and ultimately the 3,942 June low on the map. Invalidation: a daily close above 4,228.
Calendar watch
- Monday, October 12: Columbus Day — US bond market closed, thinner liquidity; Cleveland Fed’s Hammack speaks. Fake breakouts are common in sessions like this.
- Tuesday, October 13: big-bank earnings (JPMorgan, Goldman, Citi, Wells Fargo), NFIB small-business index, existing home sales; Fed speakers Waller, Barkin and Collins.
- Wednesday, October 14 (8:30 am ET): September CPI and core CPI — the week’s main gold-mover. Consensus looks for roughly 3.6% headline YoY (vs 3.4% in August); a hot print pressures gold, a soft one feeds the recovery. The Fed’s Beige Book follows at 2:00 pm ET.
- Thursday, October 15 (8:30 am ET): retail sales, PPI and weekly jobless claims. Fed Chair Warsh speaks late afternoon — his last scheduled comment before the pre-meeting blackout starting October 17.
- Friday, October 16: industrial production, import/export prices, and the CFTC commitments-of-traders report (a useful read on gold positioning into the FOMC).
No payrolls this week — the next Employment Situation report lands Friday, November 6.
EA angle
- Volatility regime: daily ATR(14) has compressed to about $75/day, down from the $90–110 spikes of late September — but do not let a quiet Monday/Tuesday fool you: CPI Wednesday can handily deliver a $100+ range. Keep grid steps consistent with the elevated regime and avoid re-tightening into the release.
- News filters: non-negotiable this week — CPI (Wed 8:30 am ET) and Warsh (Thu). Freeze trading at least 60 minutes before and after CPI; Thursday’s retail-sales/PPI stack deserves a lighter filter too.
- Trend vs mean-reversion: the tape is two-sided — a recovery attempt below falling EMAs. Momentum EAs should wait for acceptance above 4,228 or below 4,103 before committing. Mean-reversion systems have had the better of the 4,100–4,220 oscillation; buying the 4,103/4,067 zone with defined risk and fading the 4,215–4,228 band has been the workable playbook — until one side breaks.
- Sizing: at ~$75 of daily range, “standard” gold risk is still meaningfully larger than in the quiet summer months. Halve default risk into CPI Wednesday, and re-run your position-size calculation before the FOMC week, not after the first stop-out.
