XAUUSD Weekly Outlook: Gold Stalls Under the 20-Day EMA as the FOMC Countdown Begins (Week of October 19, 2026)
Where price stands
Spot gold trades around 4,180 early Monday (October 19), pinned just under the 20-day EMA after a week that tested both sides of the range and resolved nothing. Last week’s action in a nutshell: Monday’s push to 4,217 was sold, Wednesday’s September CPI — a hot 3.7% YoY versus 3.4% in August — knocked price to a 4,074 intraday low, and buyers quietly rebuilt the tape from there, closing Friday at 4,165. The net result is a second consecutive week spent entirely between roughly 4,070 and 4,220.
The broader structure is unchanged: gold remains in the wide corrective phase that began at the May peak of 4,774, with the June low at 3,942 still the structural floor. What has changed is the texture. Daily ATR has compressed to about $67 (from $90–110 in late September), the 20-day EMA (≈4,194) has flattened instead of falling, and the 50-day (≈4,247) is slowly catching down toward it. Price is wedged between the two — a coiling market heading into the October 27–28 FOMC, where a rate decision is genuinely live after the hot CPI. The Fed’s pre-meeting blackout starts today, so this week the market talks to itself: positioning and technicals rule until the decision.
Key levels
| Level | Type | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 4,316 | Major resistance | September 25 swing high — the rejection zone that has capped every rally for a month; trend repair needs it back |
| 4,247 | Resistance | 50-day EMA, still falling — the dynamic cap above the range |
| 4,227 | Resistance | October 2 lower high — the line that defines the corrective sequence |
| 4,217 | Resistance | Last Monday’s high — the first hurdle on any push higher |
| 4,194 | Pivot | 20-day EMA, now flat — price is pressing it at the time of writing; acceptance above turns the short-term tone neutral-to-positive |
| 4,147 | Support | Twice-tested lows (Oct 13 and Oct 16) — the range floor since the CPI flush |
| 4,070 | Key support | The 4,067/4,073 double bottom (Oct 7 and Oct 14 lows) — lose this on a closing basis and the June-low road reopens |
| 3,942 | Major support | June 29 low — the structural floor of the entire correction |

Two scenarios
Bullish (range floor holds): with a light US calendar and no Fed speakers in the blackout, nothing forces the range to break this week. If 4,147 keeps holding and buyers push through the flat 20-day EMA at 4,194, a run at the 4,217–4,227 supply zone is the logical next step; above that, the 50-day EMA at 4,247 and ultimately the 4,316 rejection zone come into play. Invalidation: a daily close below 4,147.
Bearish (lower highs persist): the post-CPI rebound has already been sold once at 4,217, and the macro tape — hot inflation, a live rate hike debate — still favors the dollar. If 4,147 gives way, expect a retest of the 4,070 double bottom; a daily close below 4,067 targets 4,000–3,980 and then the 3,942 June low. Invalidation: a daily close above 4,227.
Calendar watch
- The Fed is silent: the pre-FOMC blackout runs through the October 27–28 meeting — no Fed speakers this week. The decision itself is the event gold has been coiling for; confirm exact timing on the calendar.
- Monday, October 19: China Q3 GDP and Canada CPI (a USD/CAD story, watch for spillover), NAHB housing index (10:00 am ET).
- Tuesday, October 20: US housing starts and building permits (8:30 am ET) — secondary data; a housing slump would lean dovish, marginally gold-positive.
- Wednesday, October 21: UK CPI — a sterling event more than a gold one, but worth monitoring.
- Thursday, October 22: US initial jobless claims (8:30 am ET) — the one labor datapoint before the FOMC.
- Friday, October 23: S&P Global flash PMIs for October (9:45 am ET) and the final University of Michigan sentiment reading (10:00 am ET), including inflation expectations — the most gold-relevant releases of the week; soft PMIs would feed the “peak rates” narrative.
- Next week is the main event: FOMC decision Wednesday Oct 28, Q3 GDP advance and September PCE Thursday Oct 29. No NFP this week (next: Friday, November 6).
EA angle
- Volatility regime: ATR near $67/day is the calmest gold has been in weeks — classic pre-FOMC compression. Range/grid strategies are in their element, but expect expansion next week: consider taking grid profits into strength rather than letting positions ride through the October 28 decision.
- News filters: a genuinely quiet week — no CPI-class events. Keep light filters for Friday’s PMIs and Michigan survey, but spend the configuration effort on next week’s FOMC/GDP/PCE stack.
- Trend vs mean-reversion: this is a mean-reversion market — defined 4,147–4,227 boundaries, flat EMAs, falling momentum. Momentum/trend EAs should stay flat or demo until acceptance above 4,227 or below 4,147; fading the range edges with defined risk remains the higher-probability playbook.
- Sizing: don’t be lulled by the quiet tape — compressed ATR into a live FOMC historically re-expands violently. Keep size at normal levels this week, but plan now to halve risk and widen the news-freeze window for decision week.
