Free Pip Value Calculator: What Is One Pip Really Worth? (Forex & Gold)
Knowing exactly what one pip is worth on your trade is the foundation of every risk calculation — yet most beginners guess it. Use the free pip value calculator below, then read on to understand the math behind it.

For precise values check your trading platform. Gold pip = $0.01 move, 1 standard lot = 100 oz.
How pip value is calculated
A pip is the smallest standard price move of a currency pair: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for JPY pairs. The formula is simple:
Pip value = (pip size × contract size) converted into your account currency
For pairs quoted in USD (EUR/USD, GBP/USD...), one standard lot (100,000 units) gives a pip value of exactly $10. When USD is the base currency (USD/JPY, USD/CHF), the pip is worth 10 units of the quote currency, which must be converted at the current rate — that's why the USD/JPY pip "floats" with the exchange rate. Gold follows its own convention: most brokers quote XAU/USD to two decimals, so a $0.01 move on 100 oz equals $1 per pip per standard lot.
A worked example
You buy 0.20 lots of EUR/USD. Pip value = $10 × 0.20 = $2.00 per pip. A 25-pip stop loss therefore risks $50. If your account is in EUR, that same pip is worth about €1.85 at an EUR/USD rate of 1.08.
Why this matters more than any indicator
Every serious risk rule — "never risk more than 1-2% per trade" — is built on pip value. Get it wrong and your 1% risk silently becomes 3%. This is doubly true when you run an Expert Advisor: the EA only manages risk correctly if the lot size it computes matches real pip values. Our lot size guide walks through the full position sizing process, and the risk management guide shows how to apply it over hundreds of trades.
FAQ
Is pip value the same on every broker? The math is identical, but contract sizes can differ (some brokers use 1 lot = 100 oz for gold, others differ). Always check your broker's contract specification.
What's the difference between a pip and a point? On 5-digit quotes, a point is one tenth of a pip (0.00001). Platforms like MT4/MT5 display points; traders talk in pips.
Do I need this if my EA calculates lot size automatically? Yes — you need it to verify the EA is doing its job. Blind trust in automated sizing is how accounts blow up.
Does pip value change during the day? For pairs where USD is the quote currency, no. For USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD and crosses, it drifts with the exchange rate — usually a minor effect, but relevant on large positions.
